June 24 – Take Your Dog to Work Day

Will all of the estimated 43 million U.S. dog owners bring their dogs to work with them this Friday?

Maybe YOU will!

If you’ve never brought your dog to the office before, your co-workers might appreciate a little advance prep. Here are few suggestions:

1. Take your dog for a long walk before bringing him to work with you. Exercise will help diffuse some of his energy and excitement. A tired dog is a calmer dog.

2. A new environment might be stressful for your dog. Bring his bed or blanket with you so he has something familiar to lie on.

3. Walk him in to your building on leash, and keep it handy for bathroom breaks.

4. Bring food, treats and a water bowl.

5. Food-based puzzle toys like Buster Cubes or Kongs will keep your dog busy while you work.

6. If you must leave your office, keep the door closed or have a dog-savvy co-worker hang with your dog.

7. If other dogs are at work also, supervise any encounters. Keep the meetings brief. Don’t force dogs to be best friends.

8. Some dogs can’t handle the long day. Be sure you can leave work to bring your dog home. Keeping him in your car is NOT an option.

9. Your dog should know basic commands, such as Sit, Stay, and Down.

Pet Sitters International created Take Your Dog to Work Day to educate the public on the benefits of responsible pet ownership, to raise awareness of the importance of the human-animal bond, and to support the efforts of local animal shelters, rescues and humane societies.

So remember, don’t just work like a dog, work WITH a dog!
