April 18th is National Pet Owner’s Day

In honor of National Pet Owner’s Day, I’d like to give a shout-out to some of my favorite rescue organizations and the people who make their invaluable work possible.

Here are the groups that are nearest to my heart, in no particular order:

Capital District Humane Association

The mission of CDHA is simple and straightforward: they find homes for animals. They foster dogs and cats until the right home can be located for each individual animal, including pets with special needs.  I am in awe of the hard work and determination of Jennifer Politis, Dona Federico and many other CDHA volunteers.

Forever Home Greyhounds President Paula LaPorte and her volunteers have tirelessly championed the adoption of these beautiful dogs for years now. Please visit their website to find one of their many Saturday adoption clinics in the Capital Region.

Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society

The amazing work of Director (and fellow blogger) Brad Shear, Nancy Laribee and their staff and volunteers includes not only the adoption of dogs, cats, and other animals, but also education, community outreach, clinics, spay/neuter services, obedience training, and much more.

Waggin' Tails Pet Rescue

Amy Ranucci and her cadre of volunteers from Waggin’ Tails strives to “aid and assist misplaced, abandoned, neglected and abused dogs and cats.” By fostering first, they get to know each dog and cat, increasing the chances for successful placements in forever homes.

Animal Protective Foundation

More than a shelter, the APF provide humane education, clinics, training, and of course, adoptable animals. And don’t forget the renowned Fireplug 500, their annual dog walk, scheduled for September 20, 2011. Executive Director Rosalie Ault, Special Events Coordinator Marguerite Pearson, and their staff and volunteers, have a way with events, including Vet For a Day, the Kitten Shower, Putting for Pets, and other community outreach programs.

Remember to “make adoption your first option” – become a responsible Pet Owner of a rescue dog! And don’t forget to get some training for you and your forever friend!
