I like a fence I can see

I am frequently asked my opinion about underground fences.

I don’t like them.

Yes, I get that there are pros and cons to invisible “containment systems.”

Here is my thinking…

PRO

1. Cost – Invisible fencing is cheaper to install and maintain than traditional fencing.

2. Installation – Unlike traditional fencing that has to be adjusted to match uneven terrain, e-fencing is easier to install.

3. Landscaping – Since e-fencing is invisible, it doesn’t detract from your yard’s landscaping or views. Some gated communities don’t permit regular fences.

CON

1. Pain – Let’s face it, the collar gives an electric jolt that is startling and painful. It’s not enough to try it yourself on your wrist or arm. The collar is worn on the neck which is where the zap occurs. Go ahead. Put it on. Yes, that is what your dog will experience.

2. Fear of the yard (or the collar itself) – Some skittish or sensitive dogs will become so terrified of the potential for another zap that they will refuse to go into the yard, or will shy from having the collar put on at all.

3. Prohibited exit but not entry – Meaning that your dog can’t leave the yard but there is nothing to prevent others (adults, children, other dogs, cats, wildlife, ticks) from getting in, or standing at the perimeter and teasing your dog.

4. Potential escapeThick-necked dogs like Rottweilers, Great Danes, and Cane Corsos will breach the fence, as will some scent hounds like Beagles and Bassets, and some sight hounds, like Greyhounds and Whippets. In fact, Greyhound rescue organizations will usually NOT adopt if the only fence in the prospective adoptive family home is an invisible one.  Other dogs have a high pain threshold and will plunge through the fence despite increasing the level of punishment.

5. Fence fighting – Many dogs charge the fence line or race along the edge of it, barking and growling. This is problematic in neighborhoods with frequent walkers, bike riders, etc. For this reason, invisible fences should be installed in the back yard only.

6. Dead battery – The battery in the collar must be regularly replaced to maintain effectiveness and prevent the dog from escaping. Power failures have the same effect.

As you can see, the deficits outweigh the benefits. Readers, feel free to explain/justify/comment.
